Poster Estate Map - The Hennessy Estate, Albion 1884
Library ShopOn 27th September 1884 Brisbane auctioneers Arthur Martin and Co sold off a large piece of land subdivided into allotments on the bank of Breakfast Creek called 'The Hennessy Estate'. The Telegraph newspaper reported there was a large attendance at the auction, the bidding was mostly spirited from first to last, all the 75 allotments were sold within an hour! The river frontage blocks sold for £85 to £240 ($11,000 - $31,000 in today's value) and the back lots sold from £12 to £75 ($1,500 - $9,700 in today's value). The full sale netted £3,467 ($448,600) for the owners Mr & Mrs Hennessy who were the first Queensland born European settlers to be married. It was a hugely profitable sale for the couple, a wealth equivalent of receiving 3.38 million dollars today! Map shows area of what is now Albion, to the north of Breakfast Creek, near where the creek meets the Brisbane River, approximately where the Breakfast Creek. Hotel now stands. The land is the opposite side of Breakfast Creek from 'Residence of Geo. Harris', now Newstead House.
