As the natural history painter on Matthew Flinder’s journey of discovery to Australia on the Investigator, between 1801–1803, Bauer participated in one of the greatest botanical and zoological expeditions of all time. The elusive Bauer, born in Feldsberg, Austria, has left the world an extraordinary legacy of many thousands of the finest botanical and zoological drawings ever produced. The man himself remains elsuive, only a handful of letters remain and only a small proportion of his work has even been published or exhibited.
