Northsite Tea Towel Dabor

Screen printed tea towel based upon Ella Rose Savage's 2009 linocut Dabor. 50/50 cotton/linen, printed in Far North Queensland, Australia.

Artist: Ella-Rose Savage, born 1969, is from Erub (Darnley Island) in the Eastern Torres Strait. She is a member of the Erub Artists based at Erub Erwer Meta.
 

Artwork story: Dabor - Torres Strait Eastern Island language (Meriam Mer) for mackerel. The beauty of dabor under the water is unreal. The top part of the dabor is navy blue. It has silver stripes on the sides. I admire the beauty of the dabor. Dabor is one of the most popular eating fish on Erub. The best season is always during the Sager season, June-July. The first quarter moon or full moon is the best time when dabor bites. The best trolling time is when it’s a neap tide and there’s little current running. The men make sure they drop their lines down straight behind the boat. The average size the men catch is 8 to 10 kg. It’s not unusual for the catch of the day to be ten or more dabor.
