Robert O’Hara Burke (1821-1861), a former soldier and police officer, and William John Wills (1834-1861), a Surveyor, are both known for their ill fated attempt to cross Australia from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Their crossing contributed new geographical findings, as the continent had never been explored extensively by non-indigenous people.
